Federal retirement taxes
Federal retirement taxes are one of the well known forms of retirement taxes in US. The federal tax law in the country is supervised by the Internal Revenue Service. It is a part of the treasury.
The main objective of the federal retirement taxes is to provide productive revenue for the federal government. The tax code is mainly used for public policy reasons in order to achieve social, economic and political goals. Most of the federal retirement taxes are taken in the form of compensation.
There are various states which levy federal retirement taxes. For enjoying better retirement benefits, retirees and older adults need to have an idea of the various types of retirement taxes. As per the federal law, the taxpayers are required to contribute apart of their Social Security benefits. The Social Security benefit is taken from the AGI or adjusted gross income.
Retirement benefits from the Social Security are exempted in Columbia and 27 other states. Some of these states are Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, and California and so on. 14 states impose federal tax on Social Security benefits. Some of these states are Dakota, Rhode Island, Minnesota, West Virginia, and Vermont and so on.
Federal retirement taxes are not applicable on the military and defense retirees. They are also exempted from local or state taxation. There are separate federal treatments for military, private, federal civil service and other forms of taxation.
All types of federal retirement taxes are exempted in states such as Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Alabama and some other states. States like Kansas, Louisiana, New York, Arizona, Idaho and Oklahoma also offer greater federal tax relief for various types of government pensions.
States like Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania do not tax the contributions of the IRA account. The retirement incomes of taxpayers aged 59 ½ years or older are not taxed in Pennsylvania.
